La La La was started in 1998 by Catrine Berlatier, who wanted to share the songs she sang in her native France with friends in her adopted country of Australia. So began the journey and 25 years later we are still going strong. All singers are amateurs who share a love of the French world, with a range of French language abilities from fluent to “what I remember from school”. Professionally directed by Paola Bastreri-Grey we sing a largely a cappella repertoire of songs in four, five, six or seven part harmony.
Our repertoire comes from all corners of the French speaking world and from round about 14th century to the present day. This allows us a tremendous range of different styles, from 20th century jazz to renaissance courtly love songs, from boozy drinking songs to gorgeous devotional prayers. Think Fauré and Gounod, then think wild warriors on the rampage, love lorn youths or country bumpkins being teased.
We rehearse at the Northcote Uniting Church Hall (behind the church) every Wednesday evening at 7:30PM sharp.
